Dear Theatre Friends,
Although the term “beach read” is well known, have you every heard of “beach theatre”? If not, I suggest you look at most of what’s on offer this season and focus your attention on September!
If you still hope to see good work before then, look at these possibilities:
“Someone Spectacular”, a new play by Domenica Feraud, takes place at a weekly group counseling session. It confronts participants’ emotions associated with losing their own grief counselor. Domenica’s last play, “Rinse and Repeat” received raves from audience members on Showscore and was also a New York Times’ “Critics Pick.”
You can see the well-loved Hal Linden and Marilu Henner in “The Journals of Adam and Eve” in a new comedy by Ed Weinberger at The Sheen Center– but only until July 28th. See it for the stars, even if the story’s not so new!
‘Its Not What it Looks Like” by John Collins, will be at the Soho Playhouse until August 10th. it’s described as “funny, suspenseful and thrilling.” In an effort to showcase new writing, the theatre offers the Lighthouse Series Award, and John is the 2023 winner.
Playing only two nights at The Tank in New York, July 31st and August 1st, is the frothy “The Man Who Thought He Knew Too Much”— based on you know which movie. It’s perhaps just the thing for those who really enjoy “beach reads”!
This Paris-based company, Le Coq trained, will also perform at The Foundry in Stockbridge, Ma. the 15th and 16th of August, then The Adams Theater in Adams, Ma. on the 17th and 18th, if you’re lucky enough to be in the Berkshires.
And if you are vacationing in Massachusetts– try to snag a seat for “Pamela Palmer” by the legendary David Ives at Williamstown Theatre. It will be directed by Walter Bobbie, who also collaborated on the memorable “Venus in Fur.”
If you’re not in the area, or a ticket’s not available, don’t fret — I predict it will transfer shortly to a New York stage!
If you missed “Job” by Max Wolf Friedlich last season at the Connelly Theatre– it is now in previews at The Helen Hayes Theater and is worthwhile, indeed. Time Out calls it a “must-see”! The same cast of two, Peter Friedman and Sydney Lemmon, will reprise their roles.
I’ll be back next month with suggestions and news about what’s in store for Fall. Until then, relax and enjoy Summer!
See you soon– in the theatre!
