Dear theatre friends,
If you’re not already familiar with Skirball at NYU , here’s a look at their coming productions. Many are foreign and here for very, very abbreviated runs, such as:
“Tom At the Farm” by Montreal playwright Michel Marc Bouchard received this thoughtful Guardian review of its premiere last year in Edinburgh. Only on October 8th-10th, so re-arrange your other dates to experience it.
Later in October, do try to see “Four Walls and a Roof” , in New York for again, few days. It’s by Berlin-based Lebanese writers, Rabih Mroue and Lina Majdalanie. In the play, they examine Bertold Brecht’s take on the House of Un-American Activities. Needless to say– timely! Here’s a Guardian review .
I’ll remind you in future letters about others, such as “Deaf Republic” in November and Milo Rau’s “Medea’s Children” in February. If you’ve never seen Rau’s political theatre — trust me, it’s unforgettable! These are rare opportunities– jump!
Another venue for new drama is The Tank and their four-play Fall season looks inviting. It’s a fine way to discover and support emerging artists– inexpensively. Their tiny stage is a refreshing antithesis of Broadway– the walk up to the fourth floor is good exercise, as well! Or, take the elevator.
I’m happy to recommend Nick Payne’s “Unbelievers” at MTC, after loving his “Constellations.” Here’s a London review of the Royal Court premiere– of course, that was with the extraordinary Nicola Walker. The NY production is directed by Knud Adams.
Another playwright I’m following is Laura Yee, after seeing her wildly funny and insightful “Mother Russia.” Now, Signature is presenting “King of the Yees” , a somewhat autobiographical piece, directed by Joshua Kahan Brody.
Run to BAM for the very short run of “Hewa Rwanda- Letter to the Absent” –part of their annual Next Wave Festival . Here’s a description from The Venice Biennale premiere,
where it received unanimous praise. It’s created and performed by Dorcy Rugamba, taken from his memoir.
Did you miss Bryna Turner’s “At the Wedding” in 2022? Now, she’s written “The Visitors” , again directed by Jenna Worsham. It plays at Signature and promises to have a serious heart with comic overtones.
For Hitchcock and true crime fans, “Rope” by The New Group at St. Clement’s. It’s a new adaptation of the play about Leopold and Loeb’s attempt to pull off the perfect crime. Sounds like fun!
Lastly, since you’ll be saving on off-Broadway tickets– splurge on “Inter Alia” with the Olivier Award-winning Rosamund Pike. I guarantee you will long remember her performance and the play. For a similar opinion, read The Guardian review and buy early to snag a good seat!
