Fall Preview 2026
Dear theatre friends,
Here are suggestions for a few plays which sound promising, opening this month and next:
The annual Next Wave Festival at BAM always offers thought provoking work. A standout this year is “The Ford/Hill Project” , created by Elizabeth Marvel and Lee Sunday Evans, which premiered at Woolly Mammoth in D.C. last year. Here’s the D.C. Theatre Arts review of the verbatim play taken from the hearings of Anita Hill and Christine Blasey Ford. It’s a short run– only until September 20th.
St. Ann’s Warehouse’s season begins with “Kramer/Fauci” — another verbatim play, this taken from the 1993 confrontation between AIDS activist/ playwright Larry Kramer and the renowned Dr. Anthony Fauci. To better understand the intense emotions of the time, don’t miss the film version of Kramer’s “The Normal Heart” and the 1989 documentary “Common Threads: Stories From the Quilt.”
Although I’m not ordinarily recommending sleight of hand entertainments, please read the Geffen theatre review of “The Hope Theory.” It’s coming to NY City Center– and sounds like a stirring combination of storytelling and magic.
MCC Theatre company is celebrating their 40th season beginning with “ANON: A Tempest at Our Kitchen Table” by the esteemed, Award-winning playwright, Anne Washburn and directed by likewise eminent Anne Kauffman.
Early October brings an always welcome find from The Mint Theatre, this time producing “Phyl.” It was written by Cicely Hamilton in 1911, a noted English suffragist, journalist rediscovered by the Mint’s Artistic Director, Jonathan Bank.
Advance notice for a very short run of “Aftermath” by David Zax at A.R.T. After a decade as a journalist, Zax writes of a young journalist captured in Afghanistan. Steven Skybell leads a cast of four.
Lastly, run to get a ticket for “A Ghost in Your Ear” by Jamie Armitage, another Audible production at Minetta Lane. It comes with a terrific Guardian review of its premiere in London.
