Summer 2026
Dear theatre friends,
[Please excuse links not linking, or no links at all— Constant Contact is not behaving!
Here are several suggestions for getting out of the heat. Not too many I’m afraid, because this season isn’t known for presenting serious new work.
Having just returned from London, I can attest that the pickings are slim there as well. The stand outs were “1536”, which will be coming to NY and an intimate staging of “Equus” which probably won’t transfer. A very ambitious “The Waves” by Virginia Woolf at the tiny Jermyn Street was memorable.
Only until June 21st, “Jerome” is on at Playwrights Horizons. Written by multi-Award winner, John J. Caswell, jr. following his huge success with “Wet Brain” .
Then, on June 22nd, one night only, get tickets for the annual Short New Play Festival at Symphony Space, by Red Bull Theatre. Eight world premiering plays in one night!
If you can’t make that, you might try Clubbed Thumb’s much admired “Summerworks Theatre Festival” which continues until June 30th.
The Irish Rep continues to bring exciting plays– now, “The Loved Ones” by Erica Murray is on until August 2nd. The plot revolves around four very different women gathered in rural Ireland— with very different expectations.
Another company which bravely takes chances presenting new writing is the Atlantic Theatre. Next month, it’s “The Saviors” , by Bubba Weller, a world premiere directed byJack Serio. If Weller’s name is familiar, you may know him for his many acting gigs. However, I’m so excited about “The Saviors” after seeing his affecting “Well, I’ll Let You Go” — deservedly lauded!
“Birthright” by Tony Award winner, Jonathan Spector, is at MCC Theatre until July 26th. Long after a Birthright trip to Israel, six friends reune and their diverging paths and attitudes emerge. How timely can you get??
A new-to-me company, La Femme Theatre Productions, is reviving Wendy Wasserstein’s “An American Daughter” thirty years after its original presentation at Lincoln Center. You may remember that Wasserstein was the first woman to win a Tony for Best Play for “The Heidi Chronicles”. It will be fascinating to see a group of women concerned with politics— and how it lands in today’s environment. At the Signature.
Another revival thirty years on is Whoopi Goldberg’s “The Whoopi Monologues” . It opens next month at Lincoln Center with an ensemble of five, headed by Kerry Washington.
As soon as I discover more promising work, I’ll be back! Enjoy Summer’s pleasures—
Thanks for reading,
Carol
