May 2026
Dear theatre friends,
So many promising plays, so little time!
Playwrights Horizons is presenting “Rheology” , a co-production with Bushwick Starr, Ma-Yi and HERE. Written by Obie winner Shayok Misha Chowdhury, it concerns his relationship with his physicist mother.
If you’ve never seen Jean Genet’s “The Maids” , a new version written and directed by Kip Williams will begin this month at St. Ann’s Warehouse. Previously performed at London’s Donmar Warehouse, it received exuberant reviews.
See “The Censorship of Dreams” at La Mama, only until May 17th. The computerized surveillance of dreams doesn’t feel so impossibly futuristic in this play by highly respected playwright, Sorena Nora Casey.
Try not to miss Heather Christian’s “Animal Wisdom” coming to Signature Theatre. It was originally seen at Bushwick Starr in 2017 and rapturously reviewed .
I first saw and heard Heather Christian’s incredible music in “Mission Drift” in 2011. I was mesmerized then and I guarantee you’ll be mesmerized now! Run!
If you were a fan of “Our Town”, you’ll be happy to know that Thornton’ Wilder’s final play “The Emporium” will be at CSC (a.k.a. The Classic Stage Company). Although it lay unfinished for over 75 years, Kirk Lynn has completed this tale of a young man’s awakening.
Finally, if you’re fortunate to snag a ticket, see Ella Hickson’s “New Born” starring Hugh Jackson and directed by Ian Rickson.
Ella’s work was last seen in New York in 2009 when she won my Award for “Eight”. It then went to London’s West End and received terrific reviews , such as this from The Times, describing her eight monologues as “scintillating, startling and amusing”— try not to miss these three new ones.
That’s it for now– more to come next month!
Thanks for reading,
Carol
