Dear theatre friends,
Trust the Vineyard Theatre to bring you a world premiere by an Award-winning writer and director. This month, “The Burning Cauldron of Fiery Fire” by Anne Washburn, directed by Steve Cosson will continue their successful collaboration after “Mr. Burns–a Post-Electric Play”. It’s a co-production with the innovative company, The Civilians.
The Public Theatre is beginning their season with a couple of intriguing offerings.
“Oh, Happy Day” by Jordan E. Cooper is transferring after a rousingly successful run, as described in this Baltimore review.
Also, “Did You Eat?”, a co-production with the Ma-Yi resident Asian America company, is described as an autobiographical Korean- American experience.
Following only a month later is a most ambitious work, “Initiative”, a five hour epic of a group of teens trying to get out of their small town California environment. Yes, five hours, with breaks and six hours on Saturdays, with a ninety minute dinner intermission. Their restaurant, The Library, will be taking reservations!
Playwrights Horizons is presenting two which sound promising:
“Nothing Can Take You From the Hand of God” by Jen Tullock and Frank Winters, about an evangenical Southern writer and her “true” life story.
“Practice” by Nazareth Hassan is self-described as a “shape-shifting psycho-comedy”, with an ensemble cast — a play within a play.
Another with an unusually large cast, at Second Stage, is “Meet the Cartozians” by Talene Monahon, directed by the renowned David Cromer. It concerns two groups of Armenian-Americans– a century apart.
Before I close, I urge you to look at La Mama’s eclectic program, beginning with “And Then We Were No More”, starring the outstanding Elizabeth Marvel, written by Tim Blake Nelson. It concerns a lawyer seeking justice– how can we not appreciate that subject?
More to come in November… See you at the theatre!
