Dear theatre friends,
You may enjoy reading this newsetter to find Off-Broadway, or Off-Off-Broadway plays. This month I must urge you to see two on Broadway, transfers from London:
“Giant” starring John Lithgow and “Fear of Thirteen” starring Adrian Brody. Both have gotten rapturous reviews, won awards, etc. I urge you to scrimp on other things to afford both.
The Public Theatre is having a winning line up this Spring:
“Public Charge” , written by former US Ambassador, Julissa Reynoso, concerns a group of Americans truly working for the public good in our fraught world.
“Seagull: True Story” is written by Eli Rarey, created and directed by Alexander Molochnikov, acclaimed director of the Moscow Art Theatre. It is an autobiographical, dramatic, biting satire about staging Chekhov’s iconic play. It boasts a renowned ensemble cast and was first produced at La Mama.
“Girl, Interrupted” by Pulitzer Prize-winning Martyna Majok, adapted from the book by Susanna Kaysen, doesn’t begin until May– but seats are already in short supply. Look ahead to attend this world premiere. The story is about Susanna checking herself into a psychiatic hospital and finding connection with the other patients. It’s diected by Jo Bonney.
For a more comforting experience, do try “Zack” at the Mint Theatre. Please read The Guardian review of this 100 year old “charmer” and I promise you’ll leave the theatre smiling!
Lastly, do see the wildly irreverant “Ulster American” by David Ireland. Full disclosure, I gave this unforgettable dark comedy my Award in Edinburgh in 2018. Here’s The Guardian review of that production. I have my fingers crossed that this transfer will retain its gasp-inducing power.
That’s it for now– more to come next month!
