On Stage Again

January 5, 2026 by Carol Tambor

Dear theatre friends,

Here are some very promising new plays to start off 2026:

If you haven’t been sufficiently spooked by countless AI warnings, here’s a play to terrify you! Described as a new thriller, “Data” by Matthew Libby, directed by Tyne Rafaeli, will begin this month at Lucille Lortel. Read this Arena Stage review if you’d like to know just how vigilant you need be!

Previously in London, “Blackout Songs” by Joe White got terrific reviews. Here’s The Guardian review of that production, calling it a “brave romantic tragedy”. It will begin this month at MCC.

Also from London,  “The Other Place,” written and directed by Alexander Zeldin, will be at The Shed later in January. Here’s The Guardian’s rave review. These tickets will be hard to snag– get them now!

And from Australia– “The Visitors” by Jane Harrison at PAC-NYC. This Moogahlin Performing Arts and Sydney Theatre Company production was previously seen at the Sydney Opera House and received excellent reviews before winning Sydney’s top honors: Best Mainstage Production as well as Best Ensemble Cast Awards.

RUN– this is only playing January 21st- February 1st. Part of the UTR Festival, see below.

Just because The Under the Radar Festival is now 21 years old– don’t expect it to behave in a more orderly fashion! This annual collection is always worth perusing– experimental, short runs curated by the ever-curious Mark Russell.

One in association with the UTR Festival is “Watch Me Walk” , written and performed by Anne Gridley, from Soho Rep, performed at Playwrights Horizons. Again, a short run: 1/14-2/8. It’s described as “a hilarious, biting, compassionate new play about disability.”

“The Unknown” begins previews on the 31st, so I must include it now– especially since tickets will go quickly! A brand new play by David Cale, who wrote the terrific “Harry Clarke”. This one about a blocked writer at a remote cabin– perhaps more terrifying than AI!

That’s it for now– more to come next month!

Thanks for reading,

Carol
